SUSTAINING COMMUNITY

A film for Kimberworth Park Community Centre (The Chislett Centre), capturing the life and atmosphere of a space built on care, connection, and belonging. During filming, I spent time with people across the centre as they cooked, talked, laughed, and shared everyday moments together.

One moment that stayed with me was a conversation with a woman attending the Tuesday group for the first time after the loss of her partner. She spoke about being welcomed by Pat, the facilitator, who greeted her with a hug she said she had not felt in a long time. In that moment, we both became emotional, and it felt like a simple expression of what the centre holds for so many people.

The Chislett Centre, named after Charles Chislett, has long been rooted in community care and connection. After facing closure in 2011, it was the response of local people that kept it alive, and that same spirit is still present in the way the space functions today.

Walking through the centre, I spent time with Steve in the gardens, where he shared the work behind growing and composting food for the community. It reflected the wider feeling of the place, where care is something practical, shared, and constantly tended to.

Being there left me with a clear sense of a place shaped by people who continue to show up for one another, quietly and consistently.
